Description: 64,970-acre wilderness contains Mount Hood, an 11,240-foot high dormant volcano. Mount Hood is the highest mountain in Oregon, and its distinctive conical shape characterizes the Portland skyline. Apparently the peak is so tempting, that more climbers attempt the summit than any other snowclad mountain in the US. Over a dozen routes lead up to the summit, but by far the most popular leads up the south face from Timberline Lodge. Avalanche danger is quite high, and climbers are expected to familiarize themselves with the dangers of their chosen route, get a wilderness permit and register for the climb with the Forest Service, and to climb equipped with a mountain locator unit (available for rent from local sporting goods stores). The safest months for climbing are May - mid-July, and climbers are encouraged to start around midnight.
For less adventurous and dangerous recreation, the lower elevations of the wilderness are a delight to hike in. A forest of Douglas fir contains a dense understory of wild rhododendron, Oregon grape, and huckleberries, interspersed with lovely alpine meadows. The popular 38-mile-long Timberline Trail circles the mountain, passing tumbling streams and waterfalls, wildflower-filled glades, and the rocky barrens above timberline, where you can encounter pikas and marmots. Other trails branch off from this main artery. In the winter, these trails are popular for cross-country skiing. Camping is prohibited in many areas due to overuse and abuse, so obey posted regulations.
